Vibes Traditional Kava Starter Pack - Kava, Strainer, Bowl

Regular price $109.00 NZD
Variety:

The Vibes Traditional Kava Starter Pack has what you need to make kava properly: 250g of noble kava grind, a strainer bag, a coconut shell and a wooden spoon.

Traditional kava gets made in a batch. You knead the ground root through the bag in a big bowl of water, wring it out, then pour from there. Work to about 60g per litre, and a 250g bag makes around 4 litres. Pick from four varieties, each one a blend of noble cultivars we've put together to feel a certain way.

Ingredients: 100% noble kava root. That's the whole list.

What's in it

  • 250g Vibes Traditional Grind Kava in the variety you choose. Makes about 4 litres.
  • Strainer bag, reusable, for kneading the grind through.
  • Coconut shell, the traditional vessel, for drinking from.
  • Wooden spoon, for measuring and serving.

One thing to know before you order: you'll want a large mixing bowl of your own, since the shell in this pack is what you drink from. Any big kitchen bowl does the job.

The Four Varieties

  • Rocket (100% Head) Pure heady energy for focus, creativity, and lively social sparks.
  • Buzzy (75% Head / 25% Body) Light, energising, and grounded with just enough body calm. Takes the edge off the day.
  • Happy (25% Head / 75% Body) Mood-brightening balance with a gentle head lift and warm, body-soothing vibes.
  • Chill (100% Body) Deep calm with fully body-focused relaxation and no heavy crash. Great for sleeping.

How to make it

  1. Spoon your kava into the strainer bag and twist the top closed. About 60g per litre of water.
  2. Sit the bag in a large bowl with the water.
  3. Knead and squeeze it under the water for five minutes. The water turns muddy brown.
  4. Wring the bag out hard. That last squeeze carries a lot.
  5. Tip out the spent root, rinse the bag, then pour into your shell and drink.

Give the bag a rinse straight after and hang it up to dry. Left damp, it'll go off quickly.

What you get from doing it the traditional way

Instant kava is quicker and tidier, and for a weeknight cup it makes complete sense. Traditional grind earns its place for other reasons.

You control the strength directly, by adjusting grind and water, rather than choosing between one scoop and two. The cup comes out fuller and rounder.

And the making of it is a big part of why kava works as a social drink. Someone kneads the bowl, everyone else waits, and by the time the first shell goes round the room has already slowed down a bit. You don't really get that from a sachet.

Common questions

How long does the strainer bag last? A long time, if you look after it. Rinse it straight after use and dry it fully before putting it away.

How much grind should I use? About 60g per litre of water. A 250g bag makes roughly 4 litres.

Do I need my own bowl? Yes, a large one for mixing. The coconut shell is for drinking from. Any big kitchen bowl works.

Can I reuse the grind? You can do a second wash with fresh water. It'll be lighter. Don't keep spent grind overnight.

Can the shell go in the dishwasher? Better not. Rinse it by hand and let it air dry.

Is this the same kava as the 250g bag on its own? Exactly the same. The pack just adds the gear.
