Vibes Traditional Grind Kava - 250g

Regular price $94.00 NZD
Variety:

Vibes Traditional Grind is noble kava from Vanuatu, ground coarse for making kava the way it's been made across the Pacific for hundreds of years. You knead it through a strainer bag, wring it out, and pour from there.

It gets made in a batch rather than a cup at a time. Work to about 60g of grind per litre of water, so a 250g bag makes around 4 litres. There are four to choose from, and each one is a blend of noble cultivars we've put together to feel a certain way.

Ingredients: 100% noble kava root. That's the whole list.

The Four Varieties

  • Rocket (100% Head) Pure heady energy for focus, creativity, and lively social sparks.
  • Buzzy (75% Head / 25% Body) Light, energising, and grounded with just enough body calm. Takes the edge off the day.
  • Happy (25% Head / 75% Body) Mood-brightening balance with a gentle head lift and warm, body-soothing vibes.
  • Chill (100% Body) Deep calm with fully body-focused relaxation and no heavy crash. Great for sleeping.

How to make it

  1. Weigh out your kava. About 50-60g per litre of water is a good starting point.
  2. Put it in the strainer bag, twist the top closed, and sit the bag in a large bowl with the water.
  3. Knead and squeeze the bag under the water for five to ten minutes. The water goes muddy brown, which is exactly what you want.
  4. Wring the bag out properly at the end. A lot comes through in that last squeeze.
  5. Then pour into shells and serve.

A whole 250g bag makes about 4 litres, which is a good amount for a few people. Making less is fine, just keep the same ratio. Go heavier or lighter on the grind depending on how strong you like it.

You can do a second wash on the same grind with fresh water. It'll be lighter than the first, but it's a good way to stretch a bag.

Traditional grind or instant?

Go traditional if you want the fullest version of the root, you're drinking with other people, or you enjoy the making of it. It's also the best value per cup.

Go instant if you're drinking on a weeknight, you travel, you'd rather not own a strainer bag, or you want a cup in front of you in thirty seconds.

Plenty of people keep both. Grind for the weekend, instant for everything else.

Common questions

Do I really need a strainer bag? Yes. Traditional grind won't dissolve, and drinking the fibre isn't pleasant. If you don't have one, our Traditional Kava Starter Pack comes with a bag, shell and spoon.

How much does a 250g bag make? About 4 litres at 60g per litre. Make it stronger and you'll get less, lighter and you'll get more.

Can I use hot water? Cool or room temperature is the usual way. Hot water doesn't get you anything extra.

Why is the second wash weaker? Most of the good stuff comes out in the first knead. A second wash stretches a bag, it doesn't double it.

What does noble kava mean? Noble cultivars are the traditional drinking varieties, chosen over generations for everyday use. Tudei kava is a different group, known for hanging around longer and feeling less pleasant. We only sell noble.

Is this the same kava as your instant range? Same species, same origin, different processing. Grind is the whole root. Instant is extracted and dried.
